The Riviera Polo Shirt

Originally tailored for Daniel Craig in his debut performance as James Bond, the Sunspel Riviera polo shirt is the essence of Bond style. When the Academy Award winning costume designer Lindy Hemming asked us to design a polo for Craig, we began with a style that we have been making since the 1950s. We tailored it to Craig’s exact measurements: slimming the fit across the chest and making the arms slightly shorter to flatter his physique and allow him to move easily in action sequences. It is crafted from a sustainably sourced Supima cotton mesh fabric and has a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

The original Riviera polo shirt was created by Peter Hill, the grandson of Sunspel’s founder. Finding the piqué cotton of contemporary tennis shirts stifling, he set about developing a fabric that would be cool and comfortable in the hot summer sun of the French Riviera. The result was a cotton mesh that was not only lightweight but also breathable and very soft. It was knitted on traditional lace machines in Nottingham, home of England’s lace-making industry, and was named Q (for Quality) 75. The Riviera polo was born.
