5 Ways to Style the White T-shirt, with Stuart Williamson

The white T-shirt is the ultimate clothing essential and the cornerstone of every wardrobe. London-based stylist Stuart Williamson has taken us through 5 looks to inspire your wardrobe to get the most out of this iconic piece.

1. Everyday Layering

“I wear a T-shirt pretty much 365 days a year,” Stuart explains, “and for me, a white T-shirt is the base for whatever’s going to happen on top – a jacket or shirt or whatever else. A white T-shirt is like a canvas, it gives a nice freshness. This is an all-round weather kind of look. You’ve got corduroy which I always think has a nice warmth, then I’ve played with the layering and the colours which are tones I’m often drawn to – it’s quite a neutral look. It’s also very versatile. I always like a mac, just to give a silhouette but depending on what’s going on with the weather, you could take it off or you could tie your cardigan around your waist if you’re feeling the heat.”

2. Smart Toned Down

“A lot of guys just do a blazer with a T-shirt, but bringing a shirt in adds a bit more interest and helps you build more of a palette. This look is something you could wear to an event or somewhere you’d need to feel a bit pulled together. The textures are working really nicely. You’ve got the flannel feel of the trousers and the softness of the shirt into the corduroy. It’s got a nice tactility to it. But the white T-shirt just gives a fresh base and also tones it down, making it a bit looser and more casual.”

3. The Polo Look

“White close to the face makes you look the most awake and fresh and adding a white T-shirt beneath a polo not only frames the face well, but it also gives a slightly considered feel. This is the classic Sunspel Riviera Polo in this beautiful eggshell blue. It pairs really well with a brown wool trouser – you have the wintery-ness of wool with the summery-ness of the Riviera Polo, which gives an autumnal/spring kind of finish. And I think the polo just looks great with the white T-shirt underneath.”

4. White T-shirt with Brown

“People are sometimes a bit scared of brown, or they’re a bit scared of putting colour with brown, but honestly, I think it’s one of my favourite colours. I think that little bit of white from the T-shirt is really important though, again just to give a little sharpness. If you don’t want to wear brown, you could do the same with navy or black with that little bit of white to add that freshness and sharpness.”

5. Double Denim

“I love double indigo denim. I think it looks very handsome – it’s such a classic combination and goes so well with the white T-shirt. The neckerchief adds a nice touch, breaking up the neckline and leaving the white for the rest of the body which is quite interesting. You could wear any kind of white T-shirt here, and you guys cater to a broad range of styles. But the T-shirt is an iconic Sunspel product. When you think of the T-shirt, you think of Sunspel, the two go hand in hand.”
